Un val de șoc este un tip de perturbare propagatoare. Ca un val obișnuit, ea poartă energie și se poate propaga printr-un mediu sau, în unele cazuri, în absența unui mediu material, printr-un câmp cum ar fi un câmp electromagnetic. Undele de șoc sunt caracterizate printr-o schimbare abruptă, aproape discontinuă a caracteristicilor mediului. De asemenea, se apropie valul de expansiune care însoțește și, în cele din urmă, fuzionează cu undă de șoc, anulând-o parțial.
