În fizică, un val este o perturbare sau o oscilație care călătorește prin materie / spațiu, însoțită de un transfer de energie. Mișcarea în mișcare transferă energia de la un punct la altul, adesea fără deplasarea permanentă a particulelor mediului - adică cu transportul în masă asociat puțin sau deloc. Ele constau, în schimb, din oscilații sau vibrații în jurul locațiilor aproape fixe. Undele sunt descrise printr-o ecuație de undă care stabilește modul în care perturbarea are loc în timp. Forma matematică a acestei ecuații variază în funcție de tipul undei. Există două tipuri principale de valuri. Undele mecanice se propagă printr-un mediu, iar substanța acestui mediu este deformată.
