Solenodon
Solenodonii sunt mamifere veninoase, nocturne, înfloritoare, insectivoroase aparținând familiei Solenodontidae. Este cunoscut doar un singur gen, Solenodon, deși alte câteva genuri au fost ridicate la un moment dat și sunt acum considerate sinonime junior. Solenodontidae este interesant pentru cercetătorii de filogenetică din cauza reținerii caracteristicilor primitive ale mamiferelor; specia lor se aseamănă foarte mult cu cei care au trăit aproape de sfârșitul veacului dinozaurilor. Sunt una dintre cele două familii de soricomorfe din Caraibe; nu se știe dacă cealaltă familie, Nesophontidae, care a dispărut în timpul Holocenului, a fost strâns legată de solenodoni. Cele două specii solenodonale vii sunt solenodonul cubanez și solenodonul haitian sau hispaniolan. Solenodonul Hispaniolan acoperă o gamă largă de habitate pe insula Hispaniola de la pădurea uscată joasă până la pădurea de pini de munte. Două alte specii descrise au dispărut în timpul Quaternary. Oligocenele genurilor nord-americane, cum ar fi Apternodus, au fost sugerate ca rude ale lui Solenodon, dar originile animalului rămân obscure.
