Supervenience
În filosofie, superveniența este o relație ontologică utilizată pentru a descrie cazurile în care proprietățile inferioare ale unui sistem determină proprietățile sale de nivel superior. Unii filozofi susțin că lumea este structurată într-un fel de ierarhie a proprietăților, în care proprietățile de nivel superior depășesc proprietățile de nivel inferior. Potrivit acestui tip de opinie, proprietățile sociale depășesc proprietățile psihologice, proprietățile psihologice depășesc proprietățile biologice, proprietățile biologice depășesc proprietățile chimice etc. Astfel, proprietățile chimice ale lumii determină o distribuție a proprietăților biologice, acele proprietăți biologice determină o distribuție a proprietăților psihologice și așa mai departe. Așa că, de exemplu, superficiul minții și corpului afirmă că "fiecare fenomen mental trebuie să fie întemeiat sau ancorat la o bază fizică subiacentă, ceea ce înseamnă că stările mentale pot apărea numai în sisteme care pot avea proprietăți fizice, și anume sisteme fizice".
