Un schimbător de viteze sau o schimbare de viteză este o locomotivă de cale ferată mică, destinată nu pentru deplasarea trenurilor pe distanțe lungi, ci mai degrabă pentru asamblarea trenurilor pregătite pentru o locomotivă rutieră pentru a prelua, a dezmembra un tren care a fost adus și, în general, cunoscut sub numele de comutare.
