Telurul este un element chimic cu simbolul Te și numărul atomic 52. Un metalloid fragil, ușor toxic, rare, alb-argintiu, care arată asemănător cu staniu, telurul este chimic legat de seleniu și sulf. Se găsește ocazional în formă nativă, ca cristale elementare. Telurul este mult mai obișnuit în univers ca pe un întreg decât este pe Pământ. Raritatea sa extremă în scoarța Pământului, comparabilă cu cea a platinei, se datorează parțial numărului său mare de atomi, dar și datorită formării unei hidruri volatile care a determinat pierderea elementului în spațiu ca gaz în timpul formării nebuloase fierbinți a planetei. Telurul a fost descoperit în Imperiul Austro-Ungar, în 1782 de către Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein într-un mineral care conține telur și aur. Martin Heinrich Klaproth a numit noul element în 1798 după cuvântul latin pentru "pământ", tellus. Materialele minerale de telurură de aur sunt cei mai notabili compuși ai aurului natural. Cu toate acestea, ele nu sunt o sursă semnificativă din punct de vedere comercial a telurului, care este extras în mod normal ca un produs secundar al producției de cupru și de plumb.
