Teoria este un tip contemplativ și rațional de gândire abstractă sau generalizatoare sau rezultatele unei astfel de gândiri. În funcție de context, rezultatele ar putea include, de exemplu, explicații generalizate cu privire la modul în care funcționează natura. Cuvântul își are rădăcinile în greaca antică, dar în uz modern a preluat câteva semnificații diferite. O teorie nu este aceeași cu o ipoteză.
