În câmpul auto, o cutie de viteze este o componentă mecanică majoră care combină funcționalitatea transmisiei, diferențialul și componentele asociate ale axei motorizate într-un ansamblu integrat. Transaxlele sunt aproape universale în toate configurațiile de automobile care au motorul plasat la același capăt al mașinii cu roțile motrice: motorul frontal, configurația cu tracțiune față, motorul din spate, dispunerea roților din spate și motorul din spate , aranjamentele pentru aspectul roților din spate. Multe vehicule cu motor median și spate utilizează un motor transversal și o cutie de viteze transversală, similar cu o unitate cu tracțiune față.
