Ureaza
Ureazele, funcțional, aparțin superfamiliei amidohidrolazelor și fosfotriestreazelor. Este o enzimă care catalizează hidroliza ureei în dioxid de carbon și amoniac. Reacția are loc după cum urmează: 2CO + H2O → CO2 + 2NH3 Mai specific, ureaza catalizează hidroliza ureei pentru a produce amoniac și carbamat; carbamatul produs este apoi degradat prin hidroliză spontană pentru a produce un alt amoniac și acid carbonic. Activitatea ureazelor tinde să crească pH-ul mediului în care produce amoniacul, o moleculă de bază. Ureazele se găsesc în numeroase bacterii, fungi, alge, plante și unele nevertebrate, precum și în soluri, ca enzime de sol. Acestea sunt metalenoenzime conținând nichel cu greutate moleculară mare. În 1926, James B. Sumner, profesor asistent la Universitatea Cornell, a arătat că urează este o proteină prin examinarea formei sale cristalizate. Activitatea lui Sumner a fost prima demonstrație a faptului că o proteină pură poate funcționa ca o enzimă și a condus în cele din urmă la recunoașterea faptului că majoritatea enzimelor sunt de fapt proteine și acordarea premiului Nobel pentru chimie către Sumner în 1946. Structura ureazei a fost prima rezolvată de PA Karplus în 1995.
