Un comitet de vigilență a fost un grup format din cetățeni privați care să administreze legea și ordinea în care consideră că structurile guvernamentale sunt inadecvate. Termenul este asociat în mod obișnuit cu zonele de frontieră ale Occidentului american la mijlocul secolului al XIX-lea, în care grupurile au atacat agresori și bande de bovine și oameni care au susținut miniere în aur. Deoarece aceste grupuri funcționau în afara legii, uneori au luat măsuri excesive și au ucis oameni nevinovați. În anii anteriori războiului civil, grupurile au lucrat la sclavii liberi și le-au transportat la libertate.
