Un tunel vânt este un instrument folosit în cercetarea aerodinamică pentru a studia efectele aerului care se deplasează în trecut. Un tunel vânt constă dintr-un pasaj tubular cu obiectul testat montat în mijloc. Aerul este făcut să se deplaseze în jurul obiectului printr-un sistem puternic de ventilator sau prin alte mijloace. Obiectul de testare, denumit adesea model tunel vânt, este dotat cu senzori adecvați pentru a măsura forțele aerodinamice, distribuția presiunii sau alte caracteristici legate de aerodinamică. Cele mai vechi tuneluri eoliene au fost inventate spre sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea, în primele zile ale cercetării aeronautice, când mulți au încercat să dezvolte mașini de zbor mai grele decât aerul. Tunelul de vânt a fost conceput ca un mijloc de inversare a paradigmei obișnuite: în loc de staționarea aerului și de un obiect care se deplasează la viteză prin el, același efect ar fi obținut dacă obiectul se oprește și aerul se deplasează la viteza care trece de el. În acest fel, un observator staționar ar putea studia obiectul zburător în acțiune și ar putea măsura forțele aerodinamice care i-au fost impuse. Dezvoltarea tunelurilor eoliene a însoțit dezvoltarea avionului. Tunelurile eoliene mari au fost construite în timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial.
