Xeroftalmia este o afecțiune în care ochiul nu produce lacrimi. Aceasta poate fi cauzată de o deficiență a vitaminei A și uneori este utilizată pentru a descrie această lipsă, deși pot exista și alte cauze. Xeroftalmia cauzată de deficiența severă a vitaminei A este descrisă prin uscăciunea patologică a conjunctivei și a corneei. Conjunctiva devine uscată, groasă și încrețită. Dacă este netratată, aceasta poate duce la ulcerații corneene și, în cele din urmă, la orbire ca urmare a deteriorării corneei.
