Symbiodinium
Genul Symbiodinium cuprinde cel mai mare și mai răspândit grup de dinoflagelite endosimbiotice cunoscute. Aceste contraguli de algii unicelarieni locuiesc frecvent în endodermul cnidariilor tropicali cum ar fi coralii, anemonele de mare și meduzele, unde produsele procesării lor fotosintetice sunt schimbate în gazdă pentru moleculele anorganice. Ele sunt, de asemenea, adăpostite de diverse specii de bureți, viermi, moluște, cum ar fi scoici gigantici, foraminifera și unele ciliate. În general, aceste dinoflagelate intră în celula gazdă prin fagocitoză, persistă ca simbionți intracelulari, se reproduc și se dispersează în mediu. Excepția este în majoritatea moluștelor, unde Symbiodinium este intercelular. Cnidarienii care sunt asociați cu Symbiodinium apar mai ales în medii calde oligotrofice, marine, unde ele sunt adesea constituenții dominanți ai comunităților bentonice. Aceste dinoflagelate sunt printre cele mai abundente microbi eucariote din ecosistemele de recif de corali. Symbiodinium se numesc colocvial "zooxanthellae", iar animalele simbiotice cu alge din acest gen sunt considerate a fi "zooxanthellate".
