Feudalismul, un termen folosit pentru prima dată la începutul secolului al XVII-lea, se referă la sistemul politic din Europa în Evul Mediu, care conținea un set de responsabilități juridice și militare reciproce între proprietari, oameni obișnuiți sau țărani și pământ. Cu alte cuvinte, în acest sistem țăranii lucrează și devin înarmați pentru un nobil în schimb, pot lucra pe terenul nobilimii. Deși luată din cuvântul latin, termenul feudalism și sistemul său nu era un sistem politic formal din acea vreme.
