Broderie - o metodă de decorare a țesăturilor, mai puțin frecvent piele, pâslă sau hârtie, constând în broderie pe un material de model cu ajutorul unui ac sau croșetat și a unui fir și diverse accesorii. Brodate manual, uneori cu ajutorul vilelor, de la mijlocul secolului al XVIII-lea, folosind un butoi, iar din 1828 și mașina. Un lucrător profesionist de brodat pe o varietate de articole și materiale este o mașină de brodat. În funcție de substrat, broderia este împărțită în modele grele și ușoare, realizate cu lenjerie sau fir de bumbac, modele simple, cu culori limitate pe panza. Îmbrăcămintea a fost astfel decorată în antichitate. Campionatul în această abilitate a atins, printre altele, indienii peruzi, care au trăit în America de Sud înainte de Inami și chinezii vechi. Cele mai vechi exemple de broderii provin din săpăturile V-IV din p.n. în Attica și munții Altai; în Polonia este O capelă care ilustrează scene din viața Sf. Stanisław, care a fost făcută în jurul anului 1504. De-a lungul secolelor, au fost create multe tehnici de broderie.

Haft - metoda ozdabiania tkanin, rzadziej skóry, filcu czy papieru, polegająca na wyszywaniu na materiale wzorów za pomocą igły lub szydełka oraz nici i różnych dodatków. Haftuje się ręcznie, czasem przy pomocy krosienek, od połowy XVIII wieku przy użyciu tamborka, a od 1828 również maszynowo. Kobieta zajmującą się zawodowo wykonywaniem haftów na różnego rodzaju przedmiotach i materiałach to hafciarka. W zależności od podłoża hafty dzielą się na ciężkie i lekkie - wykonane nićmi lnianymi lub bawełnianymi proste wzory z ograniczoną kolorystyką na płótnie. Odzież zdobiono w ten sposób już w starożytności. Mistrzostwo w tym kunszcie osiągnęli między innymi peruwiańscy Indianie, żyjący w Ameryce Południowej jeszcze przed Inkami, oraz starożytni Chińczycy. Najdawniejsze przykłady haftów pochodzą z wykopalisk z V-IV w. p.n.e. w Attyce oraz górach Ałtaj; w Polsce jest to m.in. ornat przedstawiający sceny z życia św. Stanisława, który wykonano ok. 1504 r. W ciągu wieków powstało wiele technik hafciarskich.
