Ein Apostel, vom klassischen griechischen ἀπόστολος, was bedeutet "einer, der weggeschickt wird", ist ein Bote und Botschafter. Der Zweck eines solchen "Versendens" ist, Nachrichten zu vermitteln, und so ist "Bote" eine gemeinsame alternative Übersetzung. Der Begriff kann metaphorisch in verwandten Kontexten verwendet werden, wird aber meist speziell für frühe Mitarbeiter des Gründers einer Religion verwendet, die bei der Verbreitung seiner Lehren wichtig waren. Das Wort in diesem Sinne stammt aus dem Neuen Testament Griechisch und wurde für die ursprünglichen Zwölf Apostel Jesu sowie eine breitere Gruppe von frühchristlichen Figuren einschließlich Paulus verwendet. Einige andere Religionen verwenden den Begriff für vergleichbare Figuren in ihrer Geschichte.
