Barbican
Ein barbican ist ein befestigter Vorposten oder ein Tor, wie eine äußere Verteidigung zu einer Stadt oder einer Burg oder irgendein Turm, der über einem Tor oder einer Brücke liegt, die für Verteidigungszwecke verwendet wurde. Gewöhnlich befanden sich Barbäer außerhalb der Hauptlinie der Verteidigung und verbunden mit den Stadtmauern mit einer ummauerten Straße namens Hals. Im 15. Jahrhundert, mit der Verbesserung der Belagerungs-Taktik und Artillerie, verloren die Barbaren ihre Bedeutung. Allerdings wurden auch im 16. Jahrhundert mehrere Barbiker gebaut. Befestigte oder verspottete Torhäuser blieben ein Merkmal ehrgeiziger französischer und englischer Residenzen bis ins 17. Jahrhundert. Die Befestigungsanlagen in Ostasien zeigten auch ähnliche Strukturen. Insbesondere wurden Tore in chinesischen Stadtmauern oft durch einen zusätzlichen "Bogenschießenturm" vor dem Haupttorhaus verteidigt, wobei die beiden Türme durch Mauern miteinander verbunden waren, die sich von der Hauptverstärkung erstreckten. Wurden buchstäblich "Glaswände" genannt, werden sie oft als "barbicans" auf Englisch bezeichnet.
