Cabaletta beschreibt die zweiteilige musikalische Form, die für die Arien in der italienischen Oper des 19. Jahrhunderts besonders bevorzugt ist, und ist genauer der Name des animierten Abschnittes nach dem kletternden Schläger. Die cabaletta bildete sich als Teil einer Evolution aus den Arien des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts, die zwei kontrastierende Abschnitte an verschiedenen Tempi innerhalb einer einzigen Struktur in aufwendigere Arien mit musikalisch unterschiedlichen Bewegungen enthielten. Der Begriff selbst wurde erstmals 1826 definiert. Er hat eine sich wiederholende Struktur, die aus zwei Strophen besteht, gefolgt von verschönerten Variationen. Die Cabaletta endet meist mit einer Coda, oft eine sehr virtuose. Klassische Beispiele sind "Non più mesta" aus La Cenerentola von Rossini, "Vien diletto, è in ciel la luna" von I puritani von Bellini und "Di quella pira" aus Verdis Il trovatore.
