Kastrat
Ein Kastrato ist eine klassische männliche Singstimme, die der eines Sopran, Mezzosopran oder Contralto entspricht. Die Stimme wird durch Kastration des Sängers vor der Pubertät produziert, oder es tritt in einem auf, der aufgrund eines endokrinologischen Zustandes niemals die Geschlechtsreife erreicht. Kastration vor der Pubertät verhindert, dass der Kehlkopf eines Jungen durch die normalen physiologischen Ereignisse der Pubertät verwandelt wird. Infolgedessen wird der Stimmungsbereich der Vorpubertät weitgehend beibehalten, und die Stimme entwickelt sich in einzigartiger Weise zum Erwachsenenalter. Die vorpubertäre Kastration für diesen Zweck verminderte sich im späten 18. Jahrhundert sehr stark und wurde in Italien im Jahre 1870 illegal gemacht. Als der Kastratos Körper wuchs, bedeutete sein Mangel an Testosteron, dass seine Epiphysen nicht normal verhärten So wuchsen die Gliedmaßen der Kastraten oft ungewöhnlich lang, ebenso die Knochen ihrer Rippen. Dies, kombiniert mit intensiver Ausbildung, gab ihnen unvergleichliche Lungenkraft und Atemkapazität. Durch kleine, kindergesteuerte Stimmbänder waren ihre Stimmen auch außerordentlich flexibel und ganz anders als die gleichwertige erwachsene weibliche Stimme. Ihre Stimmlage war höher als die des nicht kastrierten erwachsenen Mannes.
