Cicuta virosa ist eine Art von Cicuta, gebürtig nach Nord- und Mitteleuropa, Nordasien und Nordwest-Nordamerika. Es ist eine mehrjährige krautige Pflanze, die bis zu 1-2 m groß wächst. Die Stiele sind glatt, verzweigt, an der Basis geschwollen, lila gestreift und hohl, außer für Trennwände an der Kreuzung der Blätter und des Stiels. Im Querschnitt haben die Stiele eine flache Seite und die anderen Seiten sind abgerundet. Die Blätter sind abwechselnd, dreifach, nur grob gezahnt, im Gegensatz zu den Farn, lacy Blätter in vielen anderen Mitgliedern der Familie Apiaceae gefunden. Die Blüten sind klein, weiß und gruppiert in regenschirmfarbenen Blütenständen, die für die Familie typisch sind. Die vielen blumigen umbellents haben ungleiche Stiele, die von 5 bis 11 cm lang während des Fruchtens reichen. Eine ölige, gelbe Flüssigkeit sickert von Schnitten zu den Stielen und Wurzeln. Diese Flüssigkeit hat einen Ranggeruch, der dem von Pastinaken oder Karotten ähnelt. Die Pflanze kann wegen ihrer Cluster von weißen Knollenwurzeln für Pastinaken verwechselt werden. Es wächst in nassen Wiesen, an Bachbänken und anderen nassen und sumpfigen Gebieten.
