In der Physik ist eine Flüssigkeit eine Substanz, die sich unter einer angelegten Scherspannung kontinuierlich verformt. Flüssigkeiten sind eine Untermenge der Phase der Materie und schließen Flüssigkeiten, Gase, Plasmen und in gewissem Maße Plastikfeststoffe ein. Zum Beispiel ist "Bremsflüssigkeit" Hydrauliköl und wird seine erforderliche Funktion nicht ausführen, wenn Gas darin ist. Diese umgangssprachliche Verwendung des Begriffs ist auch in der Medizin und in der Ernährung üblich.
