Glander ist eine Infektionskrankheit, die vor allem bei Pferden, Maultieren und Eseln vorkommt. Es kann von anderen Tieren wie Hunden, Katzen und Ziegen vergeben werden. Es wird durch Infektion mit dem Bakterium Burkholderia Mallei verursacht, in der Regel durch Verschlucken von kontaminierten Lebensmitteln oder Wasser. Anzeichen von Glanders sind die Bildung von Knötchenläsionen in der Lunge und Ulzerationen der Schleimhäute im oberen Atemtrakt. Die akute Form führt zu Husten, Fieber und der Freisetzung einer infektiösen Nasenentleerung, gefolgt von Septikämie und Tod innerhalb von Tagen. In der chronischen Form entwickeln sich nasale und subkutane Knötchen, die schließlich ulzerieren. Der Tod kann innerhalb von Monaten auftreten, während Überlebende als Träger fungieren. Glander ist in Afrika, Asien, dem Nahen Osten, Mittel- und Südamerika endemisch. Es wurde aus Nordamerika, Australien und den meisten von Europa durch Überwachung und Zerstörung von betroffenen Tieren und Einfuhrbeschränkungen ausgerottet. Burkholderia mallei ist in der Lage, Menschen zu infizieren und wird daher als Zoonose-Agent eingestuft.
