Kava oder Kava-Kava (Piper methysticum) (Piper: Latein für "Pfeffer", Methysticum: (lateinisch) griechisch für "berauschend") ist eine Ernte des westlichen Pazifiks. Der Name kava (-kava) stammt aus Tongan und Marquesan; Andere Namen für Kava gehören'awa (Hawai'i), ava (Samoa), yaqona (Fidschi) und Sakau (Pohnpei). Die Wurzeln der Pflanze werden verwendet, um ein Getränk mit beruhigenden und anästhetischen Eigenschaften zu produzieren. Kava wird in allen Pazifikkulturen von Polynesien verbraucht, darunter Hawaii, Vanuatu, Melanesien und einige Teile von Mikronesien. Kava ist sedierend und wird in erster Linie verbraucht, um sich zu entspannen, ohne die geistige Klarheit zu stören. Seine Wirkstoffe heißen Kavalactone. Eine Cochrane Collaboration systematische Überprüfung ihrer Beweise kam zu dem Schluss, dass es wahrscheinlich war effektiver als Placebo bei der Behandlung von kurzfristigen sozialen Angst. Menschen, die bestimmte Kava-basierte Medikamente und Diätprodukte einnehmen, haben Leberschäden oder Leberversagen als Folge von Hepatotoxizität erlitten. Folglich ist Kava in einer Reihe von Ländern geregelt.
