Die meisten Kolonialstädte im spanischen Amerika und den Philippinen wurden um eine quadratische Piazza de Armas geplant, wo Truppen zusammengebracht werden konnten, wie der Name schon sagt, umgeben von dem Palast des Gouverneurs und der Hauptkirche. Ein Piazza de Toros ist eine Stierkampfarena. Im modernen Gebrauch kann ein Platz irgendeine Versammlung auf einer Straße oder zwischen Gebäuden, einer Straßenkreuzung mit einer Statue usw. sein.
