Plebs
Im alten Rom war die Plebs der allgemeine Körper der freien römischen Bürger, die keine Patrizier waren, wie durch die Volkszählung bestimmt. Ladenbesitzer, Handwerksleute und qualifizierte oder ungelernte Arbeiter könnten plebejisch sein. Ab dem 4. Jh. V. Chr. Oder früher waren einige der prominentesten und wohlhabendsten römischen Familien, die durch ihren Gensnamen identifiziert wurden, von plebejischem Status. Literarische Verweise auf die Plebs, bedeuten aber gewöhnlich die gewöhnlichen Bürger von Rom als ein Kollektiv, das sich von der Elite unterscheidet - ein von "plebejisch" in englischer Sprache behaltenes Gefühl. In den allerersten Tagen Roms waren Plebejer ein Stamm ohne Berater des Königs. In der Zeit, das Wort - das bezieht sich auf das griechische Wort für Menschenmenge, plethos - bedeutete das gemeine Volk.
