Bedeuten

In der Mathematik hat das Mittel verschiedene Definitionen je nach Kontext. In Wahrscheinlichkeit und Statistik werden Mittelwert und Erwartungswert synonym verwendet, um auf ein Maß der zentralen Tendenz entweder einer Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung oder der durch diese Verteilung charakterisierten Zufallsvariablen zu verweisen. Im Falle einer diskreten Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung einer Zufallsvariablen X ist der Mittelwert gleich der Summe über jeden möglichen Wert, der durch die Wahrscheinlichkeit dieses Wertes gewichtet wird; Das heißt, es wird berechnet, indem man das Produkt von jedem möglichen Wert x von X und seiner Wahrscheinlichkeit P nimmt und dann alle diese Produkte zusammen addiert. Eine analoge Formel gilt für den Fall einer kontinuierlichen Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung. Nicht jede Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung hat einen definierten Mittelwert; Siehe die Cauchy-Verteilung für ein Beispiel. Darüber hinaus ist für einige Verteilungen der Mittel unendlich: Wenn z. B. die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Wertes für n = 1, 2, 3, ... ist.
