Ein prie-dieu ist eine Art von Gebetsschreibtisch, der in erster Linie für den privaten Andachtsgebrauch gedacht ist, aber auch in Kirchen gefunden werden kann. Es ist ein kleiner, ornamentaler Holztisch, der mit einem dünnen, abfallenden Regal für Bücher oder Hände und einem Kneeler ausgestattet ist. Manchmal wird statt des abfallenden Regals eine gepolsterte Armlehne zur Verfügung gestellt. Dieser Typ ist nützlich für Andacht, wie der Rosenkranz, der kein Buch verlangt, oder für ein privates, nicht-liturgisches Gebet. Der Prie-Dieu scheint bis zum Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts seinen heutigen Namen nicht erhalten zu haben. In dieser Zeit in Frankreich wurde ein kleiner Raum oder ein Oratorium manchmal mit demselben Namen bekannt. Eine ähnliche Form des Stuhls in Wohnmöbeln wird analog zum Beispiel "Prie-Dieu" genannt. Manchmal wird ein Prie-Dieu nur aus dem schrägen Regal für Bücher ohne den Kneeler bestehen. Prie-dieux kann in kirchlichen Hochzeiten für die Braut und Bräutigam zum Knien während des Dienstes zur Verfügung gestellt werden, oder kann von einem Kleriker verwendet werden, wenn er die Verehrer in Gebeten wie Litaneien führt. Im byzantinischen Ritus wird ein Prie-Dieu für den Bischof zur Verfügung gestellt, wenn er in den Heiligen Türen während der Weihe einer Kirche kniet. Man kann auch von dem Priester benutzt werden, der die Kniegebete zu Pfingsten rezitiert.
