Das Verfahren wandelt lineare Kohlenwasserstoffe mit niedrigem Oktangehalt in hoch-Oktan-verzweigte Alkane und cyclische Naphthene um, die teilweise in hoch-octane aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe dehydriert werden. Die Dehydrierung erzeugt signifikante Mengen an Nebenprodukt Wasserstoffgas, das in andere Raffinerieverfahren wie Hydrocracking eingespeist wird. Eine Nebenreaktion ist die Hydrogenolyse, die leichte Kohlenwasserstoffe mit niedrigerem Wert erzeugt, wie Methan, Ethan, Propan und Butane. Zusätzlich zu einem Benzin-Mischgut ist das Reformat die Hauptquelle für aromatische Massenchemikalien, die vielfältige Verwendungen haben, vor allem als Rohstoffe für Kunststoffe. Der Benzingehalt des Reformats macht ihn jedoch karzinogen, was zu einer regelmäßigen Begrenzung seiner Verwendung geführt hat. Eine weitere Verarbeitung ist erforderlich, um den Benzolgehalt zu reduzieren.
