Regalität
Eine Regalität war eine territoriale Zuständigkeit im alten Schottengesetz, die nur durch den König geschaffen werden konnte, indem sie einem Gegenstand in der Freiheit regalitatem Lande zuordnen ließen, und auch der Landstrich, über den ein solches Recht sich erstreckte. Ein Herr der Regalität hatte eine zivilrechtliche Zuständigkeit, die gleich der des Sheriffs des Königs war, und eine umfassendere Strafgerichtsbarkeit, die dem des Hohen Gerichtshofes gleichkäme. Eine Regalität war eine überlegene Zuständigkeit für eine Baronie und könnte über Baronien innerhalb der Regalität ausgeübt werden. Die Gerichtsbarkeit wurde von dem Regierungsgericht ausgeübt, das gewöhnlich von der Kaution oder seinem Stellvertreter geleitet wurde und aus den Freier des Gerichts bestand, Anfänglich waren Regalitäten ein Teil des Regierungssystems, delegierte Zuständigkeit, aber aus dem vierzehnten Jahrhundert suchten die Herren der Regalität häufig die königliche Autorität zu erobern und halbunabhängige Domänen zu etablieren. Aber im fünfzehnten Jahrhundert wurden die Regalitäten wieder zum Mittel der Regierungsbefugnis. Regale und Regierungsgerichte wurden durch das Vererbungsgesetz 1746 abgeschafft.
