Schmelzen
Schmelzen ist eine Form der extraktiven Metallurgie; Ihre Hauptnutzung ist es, ein Metall aus seinem Erz zu produzieren. Dazu gehören die Herstellung von Silber, Eisen, Kupfer und anderen Basismetallen aus ihren Erzen. Das Schmelzen nutzt Hitze und ein chemisches Reduktionsmittel, um das Erz zu zersetzen, andere Elemente als Gase oder Schlacke zu vertreiben und das Metall hinter sich zu lassen. Das Reduktionsmittel ist üblicherweise eine Kohlenstoffquelle wie Koks oder früher Kohle. Der Kohlenstoff entfernt Sauerstoff aus dem Erz und hinterlässt elementares Metall. Der Kohlenstoff wird somit in zwei Stufen oxidiert, wobei zunächst Kohlenmonoxid und dann Kohlendioxid erzeugt werden. Da die meisten Erze unrein sind, ist es oft notwendig, Flussmittel, wie Kalkstein, zu verwenden, um die begleitende Rock-Gangart als Schlacke zu entfernen. Anlagen zur elektrolytischen Reduktion von Aluminium werden auch allgemein als Hütten bezeichnet. Diese schmelzen nicht Aluminiumoxid, sondern lösen es in Aluminiumfluorid auf. Sie verwenden normalerweise Kohlenstoffelektroden, aber neuartige Schmelzkonstruktionen verwenden Elektroden, die nicht im Prozess verbraucht werden. Das Endprodukt ist geschmolzenes Aluminium.
