Oberhoheit
Die Obergrenze tritt dort auf, wo eine Region oder ein Volk ein Nebenfluss für eine mächtigere Einheit ist, die ihre auswärtigen Angelegenheiten kontrolliert und gleichzeitig die interne Autonomie des Treibhauses zulässt. Die dominierende Einheit in der Oberhoheit Beziehung, oder die mächtigere Einheit selbst, wird als suzerain genannt. Der Begriff Oberhoheit wurde ursprünglich verwendet, um die Beziehung zwischen dem Osmanischen Reich und seinen umliegenden Regionen zu beschreiben. Es unterscheidet sich von der Souveränität darin, dass der Nebenfluss eine Selbstregel genießt. Ein Oberbefehlshaber kann sich auch auf einen Feudalherr beziehen, dem Vasallen Tribut zollen müssen. Obwohl es sich um ein Konzept handelt, das in einer Reihe von historischen Reichen existiert hat, ist es ein Konzept, das sehr schwer zu beschreiben ist, mit den Theorien des Völkerrechts des 20. oder 21. Jahrhunderts, in denen die Souveränität existiert oder nicht. Während ein souveränes Volk durch den Vertrag zustimmen kann, um ein Protektorat einer stärkeren Macht zu werden, erkennt das moderne Völkerrecht keine Möglichkeit, diese Beziehung auf die schwächere Macht zu übertragen.
