Thistle ist der gemeinsame Name einer Gruppe von Blütenpflanzen, die durch Blätter mit scharfen Stacheln am Rande, meist in der Familie Asteraceae gekennzeichnet sind. Stacheln treten oft über die ganze Pflanze auf - auf Flächen wie denen des Stammes und flache Teile der Blätter. Dies sind eine Anpassung, die die Pflanze gegen pflanzenfressende Tiere schützt und sie davon abhält, von der Pflanze zu fressen. Typischerweise unterliegt ein involucre mit einer umklammernden Form eines Bechers oder einer Urne jede der Knöpfe eines Distels. Der Begriff Distel wird manchmal genau diese Pflanzen im Stamm Cynareae, vor allem die Gattungen Carduus, Cirsium und Onopordum bedeuten. Allerdings werden Pflanzen außerhalb dieses Stammes manchmal als Disteln bezeichnet, und wenn dies geschehen ist, würden Disteln eine polyphyletische Gruppe bilden. Distel ist das florale Emblem von Schottland.
