Scriptorium - mittelalterlicher Desktop-Name zum Schreiben und Lesen und der gesamte Schreibworkshop. Die Leistung des Copter betrug 3-6 Karten im Quarto-Format pro Tag. Die Bibel musste neu geschrieben werden. Der Kopist konnte zu seinen Lebzeiten 40 Werke schreiben.

Zakonników zajmujących się rękopiśmiennictwem nazywano skryptorami lub skrybami. Z czasem powstały dzięki nim takie specjalizacje, jak kaligrafia i iluminacja. Scriptoria były też na dworach królewskich i przy katedrach. Od VI wieku przepisywaniem ksiąg zajmowali się benedyktyni. Z czasem książki zaczęto także kopiować poza klasztorami. Najważniejsze scriptoria w Europie około roku 800 znajdowały się w Weronie, Bobbio i opactwie w Sankt Gallen. Scriptoria przetrwały jeszcze po wynalezieniu druku przez Gutenberga. Wydajność pracy kopisty wynosiła 3-6 kart formatu in quarto dziennie. Na przepisanie Biblii trzeba było roku. Kopista mógł przepisać 40 dzieł w ciągu życia.
