Die Schalen werden von Perlmutter Mischung aus einem organischen Schichten Steaks gebildet, gefolgt von einem Zwischendeckel Calcit oder Aragonit und eine kristallisierte Calciumcarbonat Schicht dauern. Perlmutt wird durch Ektodermzellen aus dem Mantel bestimmter Molluskenarten ausgeschieden. Weichtierblut ist reich an flüssiger Form von Kalzium, das sich außerhalb des Blutkreislaufs konzentriert und als Calciumcarbonat kristallisiert. Die einzelnen Kristalle jeder Schicht unterscheiden sich in ihrer Form und Orientierung. Das Perlmutt wird kontinuierlich auf der inneren Oberfläche der Tierschale abgeschieden.
