gr. ἤπαρ, ἤπατος „ficat”, ca
ngr. ἐφιππος din
gr. ἴππος, sau
ngr. ἐφάπλωμα din
gr. ἄπλωμα. Ca în ultimul caz (ἐφάπλωμα › πάπλωμα), *ἐφήπαπα ar fi trecut la *πήπαπα, prin asimilare. Rezultatul normal, *
pipătă s-a modificat datorită influenței consoanei, ca
sl. domaliti ›
domoli, sl. mamiti ›
momi. Alte explicații nu par suficiente: din
ceh. pipati „a privi” (Cihac, II, 256),
cf. rut. pipotĭ „cobe, tîfnă” (Scriban); din
gr. ἤπαρ încrucișat cu
ficatum (Schuchardt,
ZRPh., XXVIII, 435; REW 4108); în legătură cu
sl. pąpukŭ „buric” (Tiktin).
