In diplomatic language, at least since the Vienna Congress of 1814 and the Aachen Protocol of 1818, generally, subordinate representatives in intergovernmental transport are described as business owners. In this context, businessmen are classified within the diplomatic rank of the ambassadors and ambassadors. Nowadays, as a business owner, the representative of the embassy in the management of the embassy is known during his absence, for example because of leave. In diesem Zusammenhang sind die Geschäftsträger innerhalb der diplomatischen Rangordnung unter den Botschaftern und den Gesandten einzuordnen. Heutzutage bezeichnet man als Geschäftsträger vor allem den Vertreter des Botschafters in der Leitung der Botschaft während dessen Abwesenheit, etwa wegen Urlaubs. Er ist daher üblicherweise der Ständige Vertreter des Botschafters, so etwa in Washington der dienstälteste Gesandte. Dazu muss er der Regierung des Gastlandes als solcher notifiziert werden. In einem Schreiben an das dortige Außenministerium wird mitgeteilt, dass der Botschafter bis zu seiner Rückkehr vertreten wird. Als interimistischer Geschäftsträger wird ein nicht notwendig akkreditierter, vorübergehend mit den Funktionen eines Geschäftsträgers betrauter Diplomat bezeichnet.
