The soup turtle is a representative of the sea turtles and represents one of the best known species of this group. The black soup turtle, which was formerly called the subspecies of the soup turtle, today is usually led as own kind Chelonia agassizii. In line with the term "green turtle", which is commonly used in the English-speaking world, this turtle is also referred to as the Green Sea Turtle, in Mexico the name "tortuga blanca" is common. These names refer to the colors of the animal's tank, the top of which is usually colored in various brown tones with green or dark brown zones. The underside as well as the seams between the back plates are pale yellow. The tank can reach a length of over one meter, the weight of the animal is a maximum of 185 kilograms. The name "soup turtle" is used for its use as an ingredient for turtle soup.

Die Suppenschildkröte ist ein Vertreter der Meeresschildkröten und stellt eine der bekanntesten Arten dieser Gruppe dar. Die ehemals als Unterart der Suppenschildkröte bezeichnete Schwarze Suppenschildkröte wird heute zumeist als eigene Art Chelonia agassizii geführt. In Anlehnung an die im englischen Sprachraum übliche Bezeichnung „green turtle“ wird diese Schildkröte auch als Grüne Meeresschildkröte bezeichnet, in Mexiko ist der Name „tortuga blanca“ üblich. Diese Namen beziehen sich auf die Farben des Panzers der Tiere, deren Oberseite meist in verschiedenen Brauntönen mit grünlichen oder dunkelbraunen Zonen gefärbt ist. Die Unterseite sowie die Nähte zwischen den Rückenplatten sind hellgelb. Der Panzer kann eine Länge von über einen Meter erreichen, das Gewicht des Tieres beträgt maximal 185 Kilogramm. Den Namen „Suppenschildkröte“ trägt sie wegen ihrer Verwendung als Zutat für Schildkrötensuppe.
