Polonia

Polonia is the Latin name for the state of Poland and is used in the Polish language for the Polish diaspora, which covers about 20 million people around the world. By definition, the Polonia belongs to any person outside Poland who: ▪ owns Polish citizenship; ▪ owns Polish citizenship; ▪ has Polish citizenship; ▪ does not have Polish citizenship but is of Polish origin. The most important criterion is the own origin, or the origin of the ancestors. The person concerned must not have been born in Poland. In some sources, the Polonia in the former Eastern Polish territories are not counted as Polonia, since they did not emigrate from Poland, but reappeared on the basis of border shifts after the Second World War outside the Polish state.

Polonia ist die lateinische Bezeichnung für den Staat Polen und wird in der polnischen Sprache für die polnische Diaspora benutzt, die etwa 20 Mio. Menschen in der gesamten Welt umfasst. Definitionsgemäß gehört zur Polonia jede außerhalb Polens lebende Person, die: ▪ die polnische Staatsbürgerschaft besitzt, ▪ die polnische und daneben noch eine weitere Staatsbürgerschaft besitzt, ▪ die polnische Staatsbürgerschaft nicht besitzt, jedoch polnischer Herkunft ist. Das wichtigste Kriterium ist die eigene Herkunft, bzw. die Herkunft der Vorfahren. Die betreffende Person muss hierbei nicht in Polen geboren worden sein. In einigen Quellen werden die Polen in den ehemaligen polnischen Ostgebieten nicht zur Polonia gezählt, da diese nicht aus Polen ausgewandert sind, sondern sich auf Grund von Grenzverschiebungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg außerhalb des polnischen Staates wiederfanden.
