Couloir

Couloir

A couloir is a channel, bounded by rocks and often filled with snow or ice, on a mountain slope or in a mountain wall. Couloirs are steep and mostly narrow and due to their structure mostly exposed to rock or ice. Often, however, they are simply referred to as gutters. In contrast to the less steep giant, the rubble does not lie in the gutter, but snow. It is steeper than the rocking angle of rock, but snow can extend into the approximate vertical. Therefore, the couloir is bare rock or old snow, but always subject to stone impact and typical avalanche zones. Examples: ▪ The Pallavicini channel at the Grossglockner at 55 °, maximum 60 °, Pallavicini, Tribusser, Bäuerle and Kramser on 18 August 1876 ▪ The Grand Couloir, which is on the normal route to cross the Mont Blanc Couloirs are also As routes during extreme skiing.
