Auch hier heißt das gegensätzliche Verfahren Augmentation. ▪ Diminution im spezielleren Sinne ist eine Art der Verzierung, die mit Verkleinerung des Zeitwerts der Noten arbeitet. Beim Diminuieren einer Melodie werden die gegebenen Noten zu Notengruppen mit halben, geviertelten oder anderweitig unterteilten Notenwerten. In jeder dieser Notengruppen taucht der ursprüngliche Ton in der Regel wenigstens einmal auf, während die anderen Tonhöhen dazu erfunden werden.
