A stoma or a slit opening is a pore in the epidermis of plants. The stoma is usually formed by two bean-shaped cells, the closing cells. If one adds the cells that lie around the closing cells, one speaks of the gap opening apparatus or stomatal complex. While the epidermal cells do not contain chloroplasts, chloroplasts are found in the differentiated closure cells. The stomata regulate the gas exchange of the plant with the ambient air. In general, this is the release of oxygen and water, as well as the absorption of carbon dioxide. Irrespective of plant type and adaptation to specific site conditions, the opening and closing of the stomata is carried out according to the same mechanism. The stomata are found in most of the plants in the lower epidermis of the leaves, in the case of grasses on both leaf sides, and in the case of leafy plants, only on the leaf side. Stomata are also found in the epidermis of shoots and petals, but never roots.

Ein Stoma oder eine Spaltöffnung ist eine Pore in der Epidermis von Pflanzen. Das Stoma wird normalerweise von zwei bohnenförmigen Zellen, den Schließzellen, gebildet. Zählt man die Zellen, die um die Schließzellen herum liegen, noch hinzu, spricht man vom Spaltöffnungsapparat oder stomatären Komplex. Während die Epidermiszellen keine Chloroplasten enthalten, befinden sich in den ausdifferenzierten Schließzellen Chloroplasten. Die Stomata regulieren den Gasaustausch der Pflanze mit der Umgebungsluft. Im Allgemeinen handelt es sich dabei um die Abgabe von Sauerstoff und Wasser, sowie die Aufnahme von Kohlenstoffdioxid. Unabhängig von Pflanzentyp und der Anpassung an besondere Standortbedingungen erfolgt das Öffnen und Schließen der Stomata nach dem gleichen Mechanismus. Die Stomata befinden sich bei den meisten Pflanzen in der unteren Epidermis der Blätter, bei Gräsern auf beiden Blattseiten und bei Schwimmblattpflanzen nur auf der Blattoberseite. Stomata sind auch in der Epidermis von Sprossachsen und Blütenblättern zu finden, jedoch nie an Wurzeln.
