Fimbulwinter

Fimbulwinter

The Fimbulwinter is the first of the four eschatological catastrophes, which call the fall of the gods, Ragnarök, in Nordic mythology. It is an ice age with three severe winters, without summer in between, with snow, rattling frost and icy storms. There is speculation that climate change, which began at the end of the Nordic Bronze Age in Scandinavia, established the legend of Fimbulwinter. While Snorri Sturluson mentions the Fimbulwinter in the Prosa-Edda as a prelude to Ragnarök, he is used in the wafthrudir member of the Lieder-Edda as a synonym for the occult. Nowadays, the term Fimbulwinter in Scandinavian countries also means an unusually cold and hard winter.
