On the one hand, stem or phylum denotes a hierarchical rank, ie a taxonomic unit, near the root of the system, the exact classification differs depending on the subject. On the other hand, different strains of lines within a kind of bacteria, archaea, and also in viruses are referred to as strains. In the latter case it is not a taxonomic rank. Der Begriff Stamm hat in der biologischen Systematik auf zwei verschiedenen Ebenen eingesetzt. Einerseits bezeichnet Stamm oder Phylum eine hierarchische Rangstufe, also eine taxonomische Einheit, nahe der Wurzel der Systematik, die genaue Einordnung unterscheidet sich je nach Fachgebiet. Andererseits werden verschiedene Abstammungslinien innerhalb einer Art von Bakterien, Archaeen und auch bei Viren als Stämme bezeichnet. in letzterem Fall handelt es sich nicht um eine taxonomische Rangstufe.
