Scutellum

The term Scutellum or Schildchen refers to different things in biology: ▪ in insects a mostly triangular and strongly hardened part of the middle segment of the thorax. It is part of the notum. The scutellum is usually visible in beetles and bugs as a wedge inserted between the wings. In the shield bugs, it even covers the entire abdomen. The Scutellum is almost always visible in skin-flyers, but sometimes it consists of several parts. ▪ in the grass of the sweet grasses, a shield-like suction organ, which originates in the Keimbla sheath. It serves to supply the embryo with the nutrients found in the endosperm.
