The term Portolan, also known as Portulan, whose use is first documented for the year 1285, originally referred to a book with nautical information such as landmarks, lighthouses, currents and port conditions. The Portolanos formed the basis for the later development of the sea-books, which reached to north-Europe. From the 16th century onwards, the notion of meaning broadened to include not only the text, but also the sea charts accompanying it. In the 19th century, scholars began to call all the old sea maps with the term "Portolan". Since the second half of the twentieth century, specialists have limited the term "portolan" to the text and speak in the case of sea charts of a certain type of "portol cards".

Der Begriff Portolan, auch Portulan genannt, dessen Verwendung für das Jahr 1285 erstmals belegt ist, bezeichnete ursprünglich ein Buch mit nautischen Informationen wie Landmarken, Leuchttürmen, Strömungen und Hafenverhältnissen. Die Portolanos bildeten die Grundlage für die spätere bis nach Nordeuropa reichende Entwicklung der Seebücher. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert erweiterte sich die Begriffsbedeutung und umfasste fortan nicht nur den Text, sondern auch die ihn begleitenden Seekarten. Im 19. Jahrhundert begannen Gelehrte, alle alten Seekarten mit dem Begriff „Portolan“ zu bezeichnen. Seit der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts beschränken Spezialisten den Begriff „Portolan“ auf den Text und sprechen bei Seekarten eines bestimmten Typs von „Portolankarten“.
