A refrain is a sweeping or sweeping rhyme, as often occurs in poems and songs: the return of textually / musically identical lines at the end of a verse or between the verses as a conspicuous feature. The formal design of the chorus as well as its placement throughout the poem / song are no limits. Thus, it is possible to vary slightly every occurrence of the refraction, in order to adapt it to the surrounding strophes more individually. On the other hand, in the rondo form, the stanzas are of distinctly different form, so that the refrain here receives a bundling, recurring function. Another technique of formal enhancement is the retardation of the refrain input by interpositions inserted at certain points. The use of a refrain thus also produces a return in a more general sense than a pure poetic medium, For example the conscious return of a certain tension, situation, etc., which reinforces a "wanted" poetic image. A special form of the refraction is the chain-reversing rhyme, in which the sweep is expanded by one element after each verse.

Ein Refrain ist ein Kehrvers oder Kehrreim, wie er häufig in Gedichten und Liedern auftritt: Die Wiederkehr von textlich/musikalisch identischen Zeilen am Schluss einer Strophe oder zwischen den Strophen als auffälliges Gliederungsmerkmal. Der formalen Gestaltung des Refrains sowie seiner Platzierung im gesamten Gedicht/Lied sind keine Grenzen gesetzt. So ist es möglich, jedes Auftreten des Refrains leicht zu variieren, um ihn den umgebenden Strophen individueller anzupassen. Andererseits sind in der Rondo-Form die Strophen von deutlich verschiedener Form, so dass der Refrain hier eine bündelnde, rückführende Funktion bekommt. Eine andere Technik der formalen Steigerung ist die Verzögerung des Refraineintritts durch an bestimmten Stellen eingefügte Zwischenteile. Die Verwendung eines Refrains erzeugt also auch eine Wiederkehr im allgemeineren Sinne denn als reines poetisches Mittel, z. B. die bewusste Wiederkehr einer bestimmten Spannung, Situation usw., die ein „gewolltes“ poetisches Bild verstärkt. Eine Sonderform des Refrains ist der Kettenkehrreim, bei dem der Kehrreim nach jeder Strophe um ein Element erweitert wird.
