Sputum - also ejection or expulsion - is the covert secretion of the respiratory mucous membrane and associated cells. These cells can be further distinguished into white blood corpuscles, epithelial cells, and in the case of bronchial carcinoma also as malignoma cells during cytological examination. In addition, the sputum can also be contaminated with saliva, food residues, dust, smoke particles, exciters, pus, and in the event of blood bloody. Sputum can be used for the investigation of diseases such as pneumonia, acute or exacerbation of chronic bronchitis or for the diagnosis of tuberculosis as well as for tumors of the lower respiratory tract.
