The use of the term is intended to make it clear that, unlike folk, a traditional is usually much older and more original and originated from the people. Traditionally, therefore, are fundamentally common. Scarborough Fair, for example, is an English traditional, reinterpreted by Simon and Garfunkel and other artists. Even if the American culture developed later, the American Folksongs such as Oh, Susannah or even Gospels like Michael, Row the Boat Ashore are among the traditionals.

Ebenso wird auch eine bestimmte Art des angelsächsischen Volkstanzes Traditional genannt. Insbesondere in den letzten Jahren wird die Bezeichnung Traditional auch für Volkslieder anderer Länder verwendet. Die früher verwendeten Begriffe Folkmusik, Folklore, und Volksmusik werden zunehmend mit der Bedeutung der kommerzialisierten Musikrichtung Folk und Volkstümliche Musik besetzt. Die Verwendung des Begriffes soll verdeutlichen, dass anders als beim Folk ein Traditional zumeist viel älter und ursprünglicher und ursächlich aus dem Volke entstanden ist. Traditionals sind deshalb grundsätzlich gemeinfrei. Scarborough Fair zum Beispiel ist ein englisches Traditional, das von Simon and Garfunkel und anderen Künstlern neu interpretiert wurde. Auch wenn sich die US-amerikanische Kultur erst später entwickelt hat, zählen mittlerweile im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch auch die amerikanischen Folksongs wie beispielsweise Oh, Susannah oder auch Gospels wie Michael, Row the Boat Ashore zu den Traditionals.
