With the mostly degrading term "tunes", in some heterosexual as well as homosexual circles often are called those gays, which are noticed by a particularly affected behavior. Often this expression is equated with transe, also to use it as an abuse. Especially in the self-designation among gay people it does not have to be in any case negative. Often the self-definition as a tune is associated with the wearing of women's clothing, which is why confusion with travesty artists can occur. To call people other than Tunte is disgraceful. Used by homosexuals themselves, this term is used for provocation, but here too it is given a contemptuous connotation. The sexual scientist Richard Green describes a boy before and during puberty with stereotypical female occupations and behaviors as a sissy boy. The name "Tunte" for an old-time, boring woman is now unused.

Mit dem meist herabwürdigenden Begriff Tunte werden sowohl in manchen heterosexuellen als auch homosexuellen Kreisen oft solche Schwule bezeichnet, die durch ein besonders affektiertes Verhalten auffallen. Oftmals wird dieser Ausdruck mit Transe gleichgesetzt, auch um es als Schimpfwort zu benutzen. Besonders in der Selbstbezeichnung unter Schwulen muss es jedoch nicht in jedem Fall negativ gemeint sein. Oftmals ist die Selbstdefinition als Tunte mit dem Tragen von Frauenkleidung verbunden, weshalb eine Verwechslung mit Travestiekünstlern vorkommen kann. Andere Menschen als Tunte zu bezeichnen, ist herabwürdigend. Von Homosexuellen selbst angewandt, wird dieser Begriff zur Provokation eingesetzt, er ist aber auch hier mit deutlich geringschätziger Konnotation versehen. Der Sexualwissenschaftler Richard Green bezeichnet einen Jungen vor und in der Pubertät mit stereotyp weiblichen Beschäftigungen und Verhaltensweisen als Sissy-boy. Die Bezeichnung Tunte für eine altjüngferliche, langweilige Frau ist inzwischen ungebräuchlich.
