spinal column

Wirbelsäule

The vertebral column is, in its entirety, the central supporting structural element of the vertebrate animals. It not only forms the bony center of the body, it also connects all other parts of the skeleton. In addition, the spine envelops the spinal cord located in the vertebral canal. In humans, the vertebral column consists of 24 vertebrae, which are movably connected via 23 intervertebral discs, as well as 8 to 10 vertebrae, which are interspersed with the sacrum and coccyx. Since she has to wear almost the entire body weight and has to spread to the legs, the spine is thicker down than above. Its multiple bend serves to dampen impacts. The reference to the vertebral column is referred to as the vertebral or spinal adjectives.
